Competitive Basketball Club
We have ongoing evaluations!
We are actively recruiting players that want to be a part of a basketball program that treats players with respect and motivates them to grow ! If you have a young player who wants to learn basketball fundamentals and proper game schemes, please call or text Coach Juan at 858-837-0177 to schedule an evaluation. Evaluations can be made in a team setting during one of our practices, skills training events, or individually as well. Thank you!
FAQ: How UNITY is Unique
How many players are on the team roster?
Our goal is to have at least 8 players on a team with around 10 players max. We strive to motivate players during practices, so they can put in the work away from the practice court (after we teach them new skills and schemes) in order for them to further their personal skills development and flourish in games. We also share videos of new learned skills and also our offense and defense philosophies, so that players can go back and reference them as often as they like!
How much do the games and practices cost?
The cost for each player is $150 for each season which includes:
A) Two full team practices a week.
B) At least 6 full games a season which are played at a competitive club league with full indoor basketball courts
C) FREE access for all current or past team members to our group skills improvement clinics! (we usually charge $20 per player for group sessions)
____________
There is also a one time $60 fee for a full uniform set (jersey top and shorts as shown on this site) with the ability to choose your number (upon availability) and to customize the back of the jersey with a name or nick name.
What kind of offense and defense will be coached?
While establishing and constantly emphasizing proper fundamentals, we will run a read and react offense with various sets. This type of offense encourages constant ball movement, all players are able to initiate the offense, they learn how to move and cut without the ball so they are always in scoring position, learning how to attack a defender with proper dribble drives, and adding constant layers (options) that emphasizes handoffs and screens as well. All players, regardless of height, should not only be able to to dribble and initiate an offense while playing in the perimeter, but also be able to post up another player in the post when those opportunities arise. With a dynamic energy and sharing mentality on offense, UNITY teams will keep opposing defenses guessing.______
On defense an emphasis on man to man defense (outdated term I know) with proper help responsibilities will be the main focus, since if it's taught correctly at a young age, a player will pick up all the little nuisances easier (tantamount to it being easier to learn a new language at a young age) and those players will be able play in any type of defense in the future. Playing hard on defense will be emphasized as well since good sound defense leads to increased scoring opportunities.
Feel free to contact me and discuss things in further detail if you like!
What's the coaching philosophy and experience?
With over 10 years of coaching experience at various levels, I have never stopped learning about this great game. Being able to train/coach/teach any willing basketball players is a true privilege to me. I do so with genuine enthusiasm and an innate desire to install proper basketball and team fundamentals so that players have a solid foundation on which to grow on. I consider myself a teacher and student of the game of basketball as I truly feel that if I stop learning I'll stop bettering myself and others. More importantly, I show respect to players and find ways to constantly motivate them without belittling them or angrily screaming at them. This game should be fun to play at all times and players will play/work hard and have fun doing so if properly motivated and not intimidated.
What's the meaning behind the team name and mascot?
The term "UNITY" naturally brings a sense of togetherness and comraderie that is essential for team of players to thrive in. Breaking a team huddle with the term UNITY! while wearing that word on the front of one's jersey and seeing it on their teammates jerseys, will help all of us constantly rememember that we are a team in UNITY.
As for the mascot, my family really enjoys mythical creatures and since the Gryphon was known for courage, leadership and strength while being great protectors (and a Mendoza household favorite) I decided to incorporate it into our club as ideal symbol.
